While studying agriculture at the University of New Hampshire, Rudy von Strasser dreamed of becoming "The King of Hard-Cider". He wrote his thesis on hard-cider production. While traveling across the country, Rudy took a job with Robert Mondavi Winery in 1980 to learn a few tips from the wine industry to apply to cider production. That's when he fell in love with wine.

He took a chance and wrote a letter to Eric de Rothschild of the world famous Chateau Lafite-Rothschild, seeking an internship for harvest. As a result, he became the first American to receive this internship and spent the 1985 harvest working at the Chateau. Upon his return to the U.S. he worked in the cellar at Trefethen and then as assistant winemaker to John Kongsgaard at Newton Vineyards. These experiences built the foundation for von Strasser Winery and its distinctive winemaking style.

In 1990, Rudy and his wife Rita found the perfect site upon which to grow their family and build their winery: the old Roddis Estate Winery on Diamond Mountain (an area known for producing some of Napa Valley's most exceptional Cabernet Sauvignons). In the 60's this estate had been subdivided after it was denied a permit to become a golf course!

Fast forward to 2015 and the couple embarked on a new adventure just across the valley and are still producing exceptional wines.
