St. Helena, CA – Southern Napa, Daphne’s
Jim and Carrie Cox along with Monque and Hugh Davies at Premiere Napa Valley
Fine Wine House, was thefirst winning bidder in the 18th annual Napa Valley Vintners Premiere Napa Valley auction on February 22. The 225 lots crafted exclusively for the trade-only tasting and auction showcased the winemaking innovation and consistently coveted quality of Napa Valley wines. More than 90 percent of the lots were from the 2012 harvest, widely lauded as one of the most anticipated vintages in recent history.
The first lot on the auction block was the 2012 J. Davies Cabernet ‘Jamie’s Select’ Diamond Mountain District. “We and our customers have always loved J. Davies Cabernet,” said Southern Napa owner Jim Cox. “We tasted nearly 200 Napa Valley Cabs last week and J. Davies was among our favorites and we knew that was one of the wines we wanted to try to bring back to our customers.” The bidding opened at $15,000 for the half barrel lot (10 cases, 120 bottles), quickly jumped to $20,000 and then $22,000 before it was sold to the nearly two year old wine store on the Eastern Shore. “Only 120 bottles of this wine exist in the world, and when the wine is bottled, it’s all coming to Southern Napa.”
“After tasting how great the 2012 vintage was, we knew the value would be high for these wines,” said owner Carrie C
ox. “But our customers truly appreciate fine wines, and for us to be able to bring this wine back is really special.”
After winning the first wine available for the auction, a couple who live in Spanish Fort was able to be spectators for the next 224 wines up for auction. “The first thing we did was go get a bottle of 2010 J.Davies to celebrate! Then we watched in amazement as the rest of the wines were auctioned off. To see a 5 case lot of wine sell for $100,000 and then for another 5 cases go for $260,000 was an experience we will never forget.”
Southern Napa becomes the first winning bidder from the state of Alabama in the 18 years of the Premiere Napa Valley Auction.
The Napa Valley Vintners’ (NVV) 18th annual Premiere Napa Valley made history by bringing in a total of $5.9 mil
lion, nearly doubling the previous record of $3.1 million raised in 2012.
